I do hope I found the forum that is intended for this sort of discussion, but apologise if not.
My point is that I have enjoyed The Last Kingdom tv series and am now working on the books, but given recent coaxing from certain Vikings Fans, I have now watched the entire first season of Vikings. It is impossible really to compare the two, perhaps because I have gone directly from the one fandom to the other, but I have to say, so far I am preferring the Last Kingdom. Maybe because it hooked me first ? I am not sure.
I was wondering why people think that Vikings is so amazing, particularly in contrast to LK. So far, I have to say, the main reason that I can follow the exploits of Uhtred is because we have seen him grow up from a child to a man, and it feels perhaps that the audience is invested in his exploits and wellbeing accordingly ? Ragnar by contrast is clearly the protagonist of Vikings, and yet I do not feel the same warmth toward him after one season as I did for Uhtred after his first respective season.
Is it simply that the series improves with time (as many do) and I haven't committed enough time to fall in love with Ragnar yet ? I wouldn't even say I love Uhtred, since he's clearly a bit of a jerk. But still, he is blatently our protagonist. Ragnar in contrast, is simply 'the head guy' of a pack of characters so far. I am about to launch into season two of Vikings, and give him a further opportunity to win me over. But so far, .. I don't know.
Any advice/opinions that anyone would like to share ? Am I missing something ?
