So this fresh year has already delivered a sound blow to all those who name themselves fans of JRR Tolkien's legendarium. His son Christopher who was responsible for putting together some quite complicated notes, half-finished maps and scribbled stories into new texts and tomes for us to pore over, has passed from this world and now sits by his father's side at the table of genius and hard work.
I was astounded to realise that Christopher was in fact 95 years old, and it shames me to belatedly now realise much about a man I owe so much time spent enthralled in reading, whom I know so little about. Perhaps that was the way he wished it though, ensuring that his father's great works were shared with all the world. It has been reported that he retired to the peace of a small village in France toward the end of his life, far from the public eye. But he remains the man who brought us 'The Silmarillion' and the Histories of ME, not to mention the hopes of some countless Elvish language scholars ! He was equally as well known for that labour of love as for his famous ill feeling toward Peter Jackson's LOTR and Hobbit film dynasties. He was the son of JRR Tolkien, but he was also Christopher Tolkien, a man who excelled in his own right, though in a slightly altered field.
So, it is with sadness and still great reverence, that this thread should mark a mention of what he has meant to the world. And if anyone wishes to express their own feelings or bid Christopher a fond farewell, it seems that we would be remiss to not allow such a thread exist upon this site.
